Making Two Types of Magnetic Pacifier
OPEN OR CLOSED MOUTH BABIES
Supplies:
Newborn Pacifier
Exacto Knife
E 6000 Glue
or
2 Ton Clear Weld Epoxy System
2 Small Earth Magnets
Recessed Pacifiers
There are several ways of making pacifiers.
Not all pacifiers will have the round centers that will allow the recessed methods.
Start by removing the nipple from the pacifier with your Exacto knife, or a pair of tiny scissors.
Be careful because you can cut your fingers.
Stretch the nipple to one side and hold it tight to get a nice clean cut edge.
Once the nipple is off you will begin to carefully carve out an area in the center section for the magnet to fit into.
You will need to hollow out the center area that the nipple covered.
Always do this on a cutting board and use a sharp blade.
Please mind your fingers, especially when using force.
Slice and shave off tiny pieces at a time until your magnet fits right into the center.
Always cut away from you.
Every so often check the fit of the magnet.
Once you have the center cut out and the magnet fits perfectly into the hole, you can glue it in with E 6000 Glue.
Use a toothpick to apply the glue.
Don't use too much glue as it will cause a mess.
Carefully place the magnet into the hole.
Apply a little pressure and adjust it into place.
Don't try to use it or the magnet will jump right out and
make a big mess.
Cover the magnet with a circle of cloth glued in place.
Let it dry completely at least 24 hours
Don`t use the Exacto blade to adjust the magnet, it will pop out faster then you can blink an eye, and it will leave you with a sticky mess too. Use something made of wood or your fingers.
Remember these magnets are very strong and will jump to any metal object that is close to them.
If you make more than one pacifier at a time, and they get too close to each other they will immediately stick to each other.
Set the pacifier to dry.
I use an empty egg carton to hold my pacifiers.
I try to make several at one time, so I have them ready when I need them.
Regular Pacifiers
I love this style of Pacifier for those babies with
little puckered lips or a closed mouth.
This puts the pacifier nice and flush to the baby`s mouth and the magnet never shows from any angle.
If you decide you'd rather not sculpt out the center of the pacifier, or they are not adaptable for this method you can use some coarse sandpaper or a heavy acrylic nail file over the center area to smooth it down a bit and roughen it up to allow the E6000 glue to grab and hold better.
This way of making pacifiers is easier and makes a
very good one for many styles of opened mouthed Babies.
It is very popular with many Reborner's.
The most important part is using the
right type of Magnets.
You'll need a lot more magnetic pull
with an open mouthed baby.
There are a number of styles and sizes of magnets. I will provide you some to get you started. For open mouthed babies you may need more than one magnet to hold it securely in place.
I use the super strong, very small 1/4 inch Earth magnets.
They are very efficient, and will not harm the vinyl.
Most inexpensive regular type magnets will turn the vinyl green over time.
If you have to use some other type magnets you can paint them with varnish or clear acrylic to help prevent this, but there is no guarantee.
I always buy the most expensive supplies and never cut corners in my work.
It can take up to 3 magnets inside of the the head to hold the pacifierin place. You may need 2 on the pacifier for the open mouth babies.
They all vary and there is no set amount you might need.
This of course will depend on the strength of your magnets.
Basically, you have to get the magnets to set on the back of the mouth bump inside the head.
It is best to use the regular method and not recess the magnet because you will then have to add another and it won't be recessed anymore.
Cut off the nipple and really rough up the area with an acrylic nail file ot a piece of sand paper so it provides for a tighter hold with the glue.
Use E6000
Let dry completely overnight.
Attach A Magnet Behind The Mouth
to Hold The pacifier
Use one of your pre-made pacifiers.
Hold it in place on the mouth in the perfect position.
Now drop a magnet or two into the head and they will immediately line right up in the exact place where they should be.
You can move the pacifier around to make any adjustment that are necessary to make sure it is aligned properly.
Put glue on a wooden scewer or brush handle so you can apply the glue all around the magnets and on the vinyl.
Re-adjust where you want the pacifier to move the inside magnets as necessary.
Once they are in perfect position you can let the pacifier go.
If the pacifier stays in position on the mouth with good holding strength then you are ok.
If it has a weak hold, drop another magnet into the head and it will attach itself to the others.
When you have it all lined up perfectly then take an oval piece of red or maroon colored felt and use E6000 glue to cover the magnets and nose hole openings. Cut it large enough.
Use a long handled brush (an old one) to guide it into place over the magnets and surrounding mouth and nose opening area.
If your fingers reach you can use them.
The cloth will hold the magnets in place.
It also lets a little of the undertones of the color show through on the outside.
